November 2016 Transition Action Document: Decisions, project proposals, and to do’s

(based on meeting on Nov. 14 2016, and fore and afterthoughts)

For your convenience, current, active projects are in BOLD

Meetings (dates set) are underlined

A) MISSION STATEMENT

Decision: Transition Wayland’s mission statement (website: https://blog.transitionwayland.org/about/) looks good, keep what is there, add some elements? To do: rewrite (done)

B) CONNECTING WORK

Decision: set regular “general” meetings, announce them, invite community:

  • second Monday of the month 10 AM – noon
  • alternating with second Tuesday of the month, 7 – 9 PM

Decision: NEXT MEETING is on Tue. 12/13, 7-9 PM at Peace Lutheran, 107 Concord Rd.

Decision: Andrea to help Kaat with newsletter, also make it a regular

Decision: share and update “Big List” of Organizations

Proposal: invite other gardeners at the community garden for tea and chat with them about Transition

C) WALKS

Decision: address unfinished business of Wayland Walks map to generate momentum for walks.

Janot will take next steps: 1) talked it up with all sorts of levels of connection at Nov 15 Rail Trail launch event! 2) joined MCRT regional rail trail grp

Proposal: Katy would like to work with the schools to promote kids walking to school, in a train

To do: Talk to the Green Team about this

Proposal: Katy asks for more people to organize and lead walks

D) SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

Proposal: TW help determine a good time, also promote Janot and Wayland Baha’i efforts to hold weekly devotional, opening sacred space to share prayers, meditation, spiritual passages, sacred texts.

E) INTERNET SECURITY & PRIVACY

Decision: TW to cosponsor a presentation on internet safety and communications. Meeting = set.

F) CULTURAL

Decision: make Inauguration Day a positive event all about inclusion and justice.

To do: Andrea approach HS about a Day of the Arts, approach CAPA.  (done) Meeting  with HS is set.

Proposal: address loneliness and difficulty communicating: how? Katy: revive Transition  Streets?
Proposal: Share stories about local people doing  joyful community service, interview, e.g., Pat Conaway.

Proposal: engage more with our local paper: Town Crier, encourage people to subscribe, submit more content

G) LOCAL ECONOMY – SOIL FERTILITY

Proposal: start a Community Soil Fertility and Carbon Sequestration Program to collect and “cook” household scraps, horse manure and landscapers’ leaves into compost and supercharge it with biochar made from the woody materials, engage the community to learn, and care, about soil life and atmosphere.

To do: Kaat to invite interest and MEET with residents: non-profit, coop….

H) LEARNING: WAYLAND U

Proposal: set up meetings where we can learn from those of us who went to conferences, etc.

Decision: Kaat and Aina will put together first “class” on  soil properties and interpreting soil tests. Will meet week after Thanksgiving

I) KIDS (Sabine)

Proposal: design at least one meeting every few months WITH the kids

J) ENERGY EFFICIENCY (Janot)

Proposal: meet with the town Energy Initiatives Advisory Committee about joining neighboring towns of Weston, Concord, and Sudbury in becoming a local affiliate of MCAN (Massachusetts branch of international Climate Action Network): is on Energy Committee’s meeting agenda for Thursday 12/1 at 7 pm (Town Building)

work with Paul on plastic bag ban TM article > first meeting = set
