On Sunday, 3/13, from 2-4:30 PM, Dan Conlon, owner of Warm Apiaries in South Deerfield, Western Mass., and Vice President of the Russian Honey Bee Breeders Association, will present on what is going on with honeybee genetics, what impact the loss of genetic diversity has on our bee populations, and what queen breeders and researchers are doing about it. Dan will review how honeybee breeders select for the best Queens, what criteria they value in the selection process, and how finding disease resistance & mite tolerance requires large numbers of colonies to find and maintain desirable behaviors. He will review how the RHBA breeding program is working at Warm Colors and how backyard beekeepers can benefit by raising their own queens.
