Setting the date for Wayland Cleans Up, the annual roadside trash clean-up, becomes more of a gamble each year. We try to avoid school vacation in the middle of the month and the resurgence of poison ivy and bugs later on, and to keep in mind the weather, always the weather. It’s like herding cats, mutated ones.
Talking about the weather has become an exercise in weirdness, but suffice it to say that this year the appointed date, April 7, rolled in with a flurry of snow, too cold and wet to proceed. Still, despite the fact that school vacation had started, the next Saturday people came out in droves.
Over 60 volunteers came by the distribution station to pick up bags, gloves and instructions. They and others enjoyed fresh air, sunshine, and cleaned up their favorite neighborhoods and the places that needed it the most.
